St. Joseph's Celebrates 150 Years

The Sanctuary of St. Joseph's Church in Stockbridge, MASt. Joseph's Church in Stockbridge celebrated the 150th Anniversary of the completion of the building of the church on Sunday, August 26. Bishop Timothy McDonnell celebrated the Mass marking this important milestone for the Catholic community of Stockbridge.

The building of the church began in 1860 and was finally completed in 1862, largely through the efforts of Miss Jane Sedgwick and other founding parishioners. The interior of the church building was renovated between 1939 and 1942. That renovation saw the decoration of the church with the beautiful artwork of renowned woodworker Antonio Guerrieri. It also saw the installation of the Crucifixion window, originally made in 1531 by Valentin Bousch, for the Abbey Church of Flavigny in France, as well as the installation of the Skinner-Aeolian pipe organ.

The Mass on August 26 was followed by a reception on the back lawn of the church, where parishioner had an opportunity to share their memories of St. Joseph's past and their hope for its future.
