LEE -- Michelena Mastrianni values veterans, thanks to a family friend having served in Afghanistan.

The eighth-grader at St. Mary's School was thinking of Air Force member Daniel Fisher of Colonie, N.Y., as she performed during the school's Veterans Day program on Friday.

"Walk on, walk on with hope in your heart and you'll never walk alone, you'll never walk alone," she sang.

Mastrianni's rendition of "When You Walk Through A Storm" from the Broadway musical "Carousel," was one of the many open letters -- sung and written -- by St. Mary's students paying tribute to local veterans and military servicemen and women stationed overseas.

"If you ever feel like no one is looking out for you, know that we are all praying for your safety and well-being," wrote eighth-grader Sophie Burnell. "I wanted to write this letter to assure you that people care."
